What's a Viscosity Rating and Why is it Important?

What exactly is a motor oil viscosity rating? It almost sounds like some sort of strange mechanical term, but it's actually quite simple. You can see the viscosity rating of your oil by simply looking at the numbers and letters on an oil bottle.

Viscosity measures flow resistance in liquids. You can tell if something has a low or high viscosity simple by looking at the way it flows. If it seems slow, like molasses, then it's high viscosity, but if, like water, it flows quickly and easily, it's low viscosity.

To read a viscosity rating, just look at the two numbers. For multi-grade oil, the one before a W will be the oil's cold viscosity, and the number after it is the hot viscosity. You'll usually want an oil that has a high hot viscosity, and a low cold viscosity, an example being 10W-30.
